Main testing methods

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans are recommended once a year.

Recommended age for screening

This applies to individuals aged 50 to 80 with a smoking history of 20 pack-years or more, who are currently smoking, or who have quit smoking within the last 15 years (previously 55 years old, but this has been lowered).

Lung cancer screening

Criteria for discontinuing testing

  • If 15 years have passed since you quit smoking

  • If a health problem arises that severely limits the ability or willingness to undergo lung surgery, or significantly shortens life expectancy

In Japan

In Japan, annual X-ray examinations are recommended for men and women aged 40 and over. Sputum cytology may also be used in conjunction with X-rays for high-risk individuals.
